A Blackheath winter

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Debbie and I are holidaying it up in the Blue Mountains at the moment.

We arrived up here last night to a cute little motel in Blackheath. It’s very reasonably priced, and the people that run it are lovely. And we get a cooked breakfast included each morning too!

I deliberately left my laptop at home so that we could just enjoy some time together without laptops. My iPhone is still getting a workout though… don’t think I’d survive with absolutely no technology.

Looking forward to dinner tomorrow night though – down the road at the St Mounts Italian restaurant. I took Debbie there for lunch the day I proposed to her, and it’s some of the nicest food I’ve eaten at a restaurant.

And then it will be back home for AFL on Saturday arvo! Holidays are good.

One last post about holidaying…

Rather than post all the photos up here and clog up the blogfeed… There are a bunch on Facebook. Even if you don’t have Facebook, you can see them by clicking here.

home again home again

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

It was a long drive, but it was broken up nicely, and now we’re both home again.

We left Hervey Bay about 7am yesterday. The traffic wasn’t too bad all the way down through QLD. Once we hit the 110km/h zones just before Brisbane, things started to flow much more nicely. We stopped for a pie just north of Brisbane, and then pushed on through to lunch at Grafton Oportos. And then eventually we cruised on into Crescent Head, just south of Kempsey. The parents of one of Debbie’s friends have a holiday house there, and they were kind enough to offer us a bed for the night. We felt very welcome and looked after – far more than we could’ve asked for.

Debbie and I went for a wander through Crescent Head in the evening, and then again this morning to look at some markets. It’s a cute little town. I think I’d really like to have somewhere like that to regularly escape to on a holiday that could be “ours”.

Then today’s driving was much less. We headed towards Taree to visit Debbie’s Grandma at Old Bar. She was lovely and had baked a couple of cakes for morning tea and filled us in with tales of the family, and even some family history that Debbie didn’t know about. From there, it was only an hour and a half to Heatherbrae, where it was a good quality steak & kidney pie for lunch for me, and a vege quiche for Debbie.

By that stage, it was nap time for James, and Debbie drove the F3 down into Sydney. We got off the F3 at about 3:15… great time. 6 hours from Crescent Head to Sydney with two fairly long stops.

2797km… 4 full tanks of petrol (200L)

One of the best holidays I’ve ever had. And makes me very much look forward to spending the rest of my life with Debbie. :)

Now, after a decent nap in my own bed, it’s off to church.

big adventures day

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

It seems people don’t like the new theme. That’s cool. I listen to the readers. So it will go soon. Possibly not til I get back to Sydney, but we’ll see. Cheers for the comments.

Today was amazingly busy. It was the super adventures day of the trip…

We headed into the main shopping centre here in HB. Debbie was looking for some summery dresses, and I kinda needed some more shorts – can’t wear jeans all summer. A visit to the Rivers outlet store and then to Colorado solved that. I had a Jamaica Blue coffee in there too, and it was yum.

Following that, it was out to Burrum Heads – a beautiful little town about half an hour north of Hervey Bay. It’s slightly inland, and sits on the edge of a river, just down from the heads. Amazingly clear water, and pretty spectacular views at the main park. We fetched some fish and chips (which were very, very tasty) and sat by the water and ate.

And then we went for a swim too. It was pretty cold, but tops.

From there, it was time to head all the way back down to Hervey Bay, and all the way through Hervey Bay to the otherside where the Marina is. After getting an ice cream from Baskin Robins, it was time to board a ferry and head across to Fraser Island for my most looked forward to evening of the week.

The ferry ride was beautiful. It was cool, but not freezing. We arrived with time to spare before dinner, and so we sat in a cute little hut near the jetty and watched the sunset over drinks. Very, very amazing. After that, we walked about 5 minutes up the roads of the resort, with a huge canopy of trees above us, and into the restaurant for dinner. It was a European themed buffet apparently – but I couldn’t really work out the European bit. All there was that was really European was a yummy antipasto selection. Everything else was pretty much standard buffet food. But it was good.

And then it was time to head back to the mainland. Before coming back home here, we headed down to the beach near my Aunt & Uncle’s place and just sat on the steps, listening to the waves, talking to God, and just enjoying the week that’s been.

God has truly blessed us with such an amazing time this week. I am so very relaxed, happy and even more looking forward to being married :)

One more day til the big drive back home…

cafe nerds

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Debbie and I look like massive nerds this morning – we’re sitting down at the beautiful beach cafe in Hervey Bay, both with our laptops open :) But there’s a good purpose behind it – we’re doing wedding stuff. There’s a few things that we want to get organised while we’re here, and we’re well on the way to getting them done. Go us.

Yesterday was quite a relaxing one – we headed down here in the morning to the cafe and sat for while. After that, we headed down to the Marina to book our ticket on a fun twilight cruise across to Fraser Island, which includes a buffet dinner – all for less than $50 each! Score.

We had to head to Woolies to grab a couple of things, and while we were there, I spotted Jerry Maguire for $8. Debbie had never seen it before, and so our lunchtime viewing was set. And then after that was just bludging by the pool before heading out to visit my Nan and Grandpa in their cute little unit and having dinner with them. They have been funny this visit – loving to chat and tell stories… much more than grandparents usually do! I reckon they’re just showing off their grandparent-ness in front of Debbie ;)

And today… well, after this, we’re heading down to the Boat Club to have lunch with my grandparents… and then who knows what the afternoon will hold. Almost certainly a nap. And nothing.

Holidays are tops.

the first proper day of holidays

Monday, September 29th, 2008

So it was the first real day of holidays today I guess. Yesterday was just driving all day, and fun though that was, it definitely isn’t the highlight of a holiday for me.

Today was only 3 hours of driving to get here to Hervey Bay, and some of that time was spent wandering through the centre of Maryborough to find somewhere to have some lunch. We eventually found a cool little cafe/diner, where we had a nice chicken burger before heading into Hervey Bay.

It was awesome to arrive at my Aunt & Uncle’s place. Thanks to the last few holidays up here, I very much associate relaxation with their beautiful place, so I felt pretty chilled out and very happy as soon as I got here. We sat around for a while just chatting and enjoying the beautifully cool breeze that was blowing in off the ocean.

It’s 10:30 now, and my gosh do I need sleep. I really should’ve gone to bed about an hour ago… but I’d forgotten how much my cousin and I both enjoy chatting about our churches and about music within our churches particularly. We can talk lots. And I think we will over the next few days. I very much enjoy seeing her – unfortunately it doesn’t happen as much as we’d like.

Looking forward to the next few days up here though – it’s going to be amazing.

short stop in Brisbane…

Monday, September 29th, 2008

So our time in Brisbane is going to be a bit shorter than we expected. We were going to stay here for another night, but we’re heading up to Hervey Bay shortly.

My cousin, who we’re staying with here in Brisbane isn’t feeling too well and needs a break… and so is actually coming up to stay in Hervey Bay with my Aunt & Uncle (her parents), which is where we’re staying. And her beautiful kids are coming up to stay as well.

It’ll mean there’ll be a few more people around in Hervey Bay, but I’m sure it will still be a beautiful time. Debbie and I will find some time to just do things on our own, I’m sure. We’ll need to work out fun day trips to have – maybe up to Burrum Heads, where I reckon there’s the most crystal clear water ever.

It’s going to be a tops week I think. Some planning on the fly, but that’s what’s fun about a holiday.

Off to Hervey Bay – wondering what the music will be.

halfway to Brisvegas

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

Sitting in a lovely little park beside Jetty Beach in Coffs Harbour. Debbie and I have just enjoyed some very awesome fish & chips. There was even sprigs of rosemary in the chips for flavour!

We’ve just spent the last 7ish hours driving up from Sydney, and had a really good run. I was getting pretty sick of the 80 zones where all the roadworks are between Newcastle and here, but it my memory serves me correctly, from here on in is much better. Hoping to be in Brisbane at about 6 tonight.

Our music selection has gone one for Debbie, one for James, etc. So far, we’ve had…

  • Chris Tomlin - Hello, Love
  • Relient K - Two Lefts Don’t Make a Right, But Three Do
  • A Walk To Remember - Soundtrack (if it weren’t for Switchfoot, this would’ve been painful)
  • The Rocket Summer - Do You Feel?
  • Sons of Korah - Redemption Songs
  • Revive - Trafalgar St

I intend to keep my ‘R’ bands going… so I will need to think about the next cd selection carefully. :)

I’m quite envious of Debbie – I’ve driven all the way so far, but she’s very able to sit and read, or play games on the iPhone, or even do Sudoku. When I get my chance for a break, all I’ll be able to do is just sleep – I’ll end up making myself sick if I try and actually do anything. But sleep will be fun. Hopefully that will happen soon.

We’re hopefully about halfway now – we’ve done about 500kms, and have actually been driving for about 6 hours. Still got plenty of petrol left too – go, Micky.

Onwards to Brisbane…
