7 years old

7 years ago today, I started blogging.

I removed access to my archives a while ago cos I was a bit mean to Telstra back in the day, and I didn’t really want that to be seen as being written by me as an employee of the company. So it was safer to abandon them.

But it’s a good thing, cos re-reading some of my early blog posts in 2003 makes me hugely embarassed that some of that trash made it onto the web!

tomorrow is work day

Monday, October 6th, 2008

I’m a bit indifferent about that at the moment. I’m not looking forward to it… but I’m not dreading it, so that’s a good thing I guess.

Today was a fun last day of holidays though – went into Hornsby this morning to catch up with Sam and have a coffee, and then he came round to Debbie’s and we all had some lunch. Debbie and I then headed off to my parents to have an early dinner with them before they headed off to the UK for 7 weeks. It was a fun evening, and I got to share all the fun Hervey Bay stories with Mum and tell her all the funny things that my grandparents did while we were there. They were a good pair for Debbie :)

And then it was off for a drive into the airport to drop them off. Thankfully, Debbie came with me which meant my drive home was not so boring :)

Now I’m just sitting here having the last glass of red from the bottle, watching the end of City Homicide… and then it will definitely be bed time for me. Hoping for a fairly relaxing day tomorrow just catching up on some emails and catching up with people. We’ll see what happens.

I’ve found a new theme too. Pretty similar to one I had before. But simpler all the same.

new theme

A holiday seems like a good time to wander through masses of wordpress themes to find one I like.

This one looks cool, so I thought I’d give it a go. Didn’t need too much changing for me to like it either.

Let me know your thoughts if you like. The comment link is now over on the left of this post box and is represented by a number.

Curious to know how the opacities of the different sections that make up the page work on IE. I’ll decide if I care or not later ;)

site update and personality tests

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Twitter updates are back. Don’t know why the script I was previously used doesn’t work with this theme… but there you go. Just using a basic one now, so it doesn’t auto-hyperlink URLs, and I don’t have the option of not including replies. Pity.

I think I’ll get a new theme anyway… I don’t like how the comments are displayed over two columns. And I can’t work out how to stop that happening. I probably could learn, but it’s more than I have time for lately.

I’ve also found a cool app for my iPhone called Scrobble and it sends data up to Last.fm as soon as I listen to a track on my iPhone. So I’ve started using Last.fm again and have put the AudioScrobbler app back on my Mac as well. So my most recently listened to tracks now appear in my sidebar. Fun times.

And lastly in site news, I’ve started using Akismet to stop comment spam. So I’ve removed comment moderation for now, and we’ll see how that goes. At the moment, it’s catching the odd genuine comment, so I’ll have to train it a bit more, apparently. Apologies if your comment gets caught – I’ll try and unspam it quickly.

In other news, we didn’t study the bible much last night at bible study. Instead we did a personality test and found out what animal we were like. I’m like an Otter – very details oriented, and loves to get the job done right. Der. We also got biblical charaters who had the same personality style as us, and some good passages for us to reflect on. Pretty awesome. I had to sit back and think about the people who wrote the test – they would’ve had to go through almost every person in the bible and, from what we know about them only from that book, try and complete the personality test thinking like that would. Man that would’ve been tough.

Having a Kedron de-brief session tonight. Not feeling overly thrilled by the idea… not sure why though.

WP upgrade and iPhone admin

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

Listening to some OC Supertones while I be a nerd. I tend to think that OC Supertones are [were] the best ska band. Does anyone care to dispute?

Upgraded my site to WP 2.6 this evening. There’s a couple of cool additions… but nothing substantially awesome. The 2.5 update was the best in my mind – the admin interface was nearly perfect after that upgrade.

But sadly, the WP dashboard don’t work on the iPhone Safari. I’ve been searching for a nice iPhone app or WP plugin to make that happen. I think the answer is definitely here in the WordPress for iPhone app – a native app for the iPhone which you just configure with your blog details. Very cool. But sadly, not released as of yet.

In the meantime, I’ve found WPhone – a WordPress plugin that you install on your server, and then activate. Once activated, when you login from your iPhone, you can just check a box that activates a very cutdown version of the admin pages, and actually works pretty well. I like it so far.

edit: while playing around with WordPress things, I thought a new theme would be fun too. Just need to work out why Twitter isn’t working anymore.

And since I’ve done all that nerdiness tonight, I’m going to have some fun with a meme. It has been a while. Some of the questions are a bit stupid, but still fun.

a. Type your answer to each of the questions below into Flickr Search.
b. Using only the first page of search results, pick an image.
c. Copy and paste each of the URLs for the images into FD’s mosaic maker.

1. What is your first name?
2. What is your favourite food?
3. What high school did you go to?
4. What is your favourite colour?
5. Who is your celebrity crush?
6. Favourite drink?
7. Dream vacation?
8. Favourite dessert?
9. What do you want to be when you grow up?
10. What do you love most in life?
11. One word to describe you.
12. Your flickr name.

Quite sophisticated eh?

It’ll change a bit over the next day or so while I fix it up a little.

edit: getting there. and dammit, why is it that coding is so time-consuming? I just looked at the look and realised it’s after midnight.

being a user

Friday, April 11th, 2008

I have comment moderation enabled, and have from the start of using Wordpress, because I get around 50 spam comments per week on WP, but got barely any on Blogger. Weird. That’s the only downside to WordPress I reckon.

Anyway, I changed the comments around a tad so you can now create yourself as a user, and then can just comment whenever and bypass moderation. All you need is an email address – the system will email you a password, and then you’re in.

upgrade

Watching the soccer on tv… sort of.

In the meantime I’ve been sitting in the corner of the loungeroom upgrading my blog to 2.3.3 of Wordpress. It was the first upgrade I did, and it worked beautifully. Hooray! The only crap bit was that a funky little code hack in the post editor page that fixed an issue in Safari doesn’t work anymore. So I will write up a forum post asking the coding geniuses if they can find the same fix in the 2.3.3 code.

Happy 5th Birthday!

Hooray for 5 years of steady blogging!

I don’t think I’ve ever had more than a week or so off from blogging in 5 years. And in celebration of 5 years, I actually fixed the archives so you can go back and look at the first posts I wrote in February 2003 as I began university… and shudder like I did.

welcome to wordpress prawn

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

Oh how on earth did I go on so long with Blogger when glorious WordPress was right here?

Still getting some things sorted out… the template isn’t quite right, neither is the header. But I will get there. Will write more soon.

update: fixed a couple of things up. Can’t quite get my list of links to show up, and I can’t quite work out why the white background stops at the bottom of the sidebar. How strange. But I like this template.

I will post more about my weekend later tonight.

update #2: ok, my archives are throwing me 403 errors. And I have no idea why. I haven’t customised them except by putting them in a dropdown menu. Any assistance would be lovely.
